Ingredients

  • 1 lemon
  • 1 orange
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 750-milliliter bottle dry red or white wine, chilled
  • 1 to 2 cups carbonated water, chilled
  • 2 tablespoons brandy
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

  1. Cut lemon and orange into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Place the 4 end slices from the lemon and orange in a saucepan; set aside remaining slices. For syrup, add sugar and water to the saucepan. Bring to boiling, stirring till sugar dissolves.
  2. Remove from heat; cool. Squeeze juice from cooked fruit into the syrup. Discard cooked fruit.
  3. In a pitcher combine remaining fruit slices, syrup, wine, carbonated water, and brandy. Serve over ice.
  4. Microwave directions: Cut fruit as above. In a 2-cup measure micro-cook fruit end slices, sugar, and water, uncovered, on 100% power (high) for 2 to 3 minutes or till boiling, stirring once. Continue as above.
