Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil
  • Shortening or cooking oil for deep-fat frying
  • 4 medium mild yellow or white onions, sliced 1/4 inch thick

Instructions

  1. In a bowl combine flour, milk, egg, the 1 tablespoon oil, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Beat with a rotary beater just till smooth.
  2. In a large skillet heat 1 inch of shortening or oil to 375°. Separate onions into rings. Using a fork, dip onion rings into batter; drain off excess batter.
  3. Fry onion rings, a few at a time, in a single layer in hot oil 2 to 3 minutes or till golden, stirring once or twice with a fork to separate rings. Remove from oil; drain on paper towels.
