Devil's Food Cake

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs

Instructions

  1. In a bowl combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Add milk, shortening, and vanilla. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed till combined. Beat on high speed for 2 minutes. Add eggs and beat 2 minutes more.
  2. Pour into 2 greased and floured 9x1 1/2-inch round baking pans. Bake in a 350° oven for 30 to 35 minutes or till a toothpick comes out clean. Cool on racks 10 minutes. Remove from pans. Cool on racks.
  3. Sour Cream Devil's Food Cake: Prepare as above, except reduce milk to 1 1/4 cups and add 1/2 cup dairy sour cream with the milk.
