
Cheese Strata

Ingredients
- 6 slices bread, halved diagonally
- 5 1-ounce slices American or Swiss cheese
- 4 eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1/3 cup sliced green onion
- 2 teaspoons prepared mustard or Dijon-style mustard
- Paprika
Instructions
- In a greased 8x8x2-inch baking dish layer 8 bread-slice halves, the cheese slices, then the remaining bread-slice halves. Beat eggs; stir in milk, onion, mustard, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Pour over bread and cheese layers. Sprinkle with paprika. Cover; chill in the refrigerator for 2 to 24 hours. Bake, uncovered, in a 325° oven for 45 to 50 minutes or till set and lightly browned. Let stand 10 minutes.
- Vegetable Cheese Strata: Prepare as above, except layer 1 cup chopped cooked broccoli or carrot atop cheese slices.
- Meat Cheese Strata: Prepare as above, except layer 1 cup diced fully cooked ham or 1 cup diced cooked chicken or turkey atop cheese slices. (If using ham, omit salt.)
